Description
Course: 6th Grade Issues and Earth Science (IAES)
Room: G-105

I would like to welcome you to 6th grade Earth Science! I look forward to an exciting year in using science to learn about our earth! We will all work together to learn about science and to think and work like a scientist. As a scientist, we will all R.E.A.C.H for excellence together!

Course Description:
This is a year-long inquiry-based Earth Science curriculum which focuses on investigations in which you will test the ideas, interpret results, and revise your ideas. You will participate in several kinds of activities to learn about science. Through a combination of readings, models, debates, role plays and projects, you will come to understand several scientific concepts. You will also design and carry out you own experiments. As you do these difference activities you will find that certain scientific ideas come up repeatedly. You will be expected to do more than memorize scientific facts and methods. You will be able to explain and apply these facts and methods to real-life situations along with applying these facts to your everyday life.

Topics You Will Learn:
• Soils
• Shaping the Land
• Rocks and Minerals
• Plate Tectonics
• Weather
• Atmosphere
• Earth in Space
• Solar System

Class Participation/preparedness: (materials)
Class discussions help you to learn from each other and the discussions help me spot misunderstanding. Share in the discussions and listen as others share is going to be very important this year.

To ensure that you will be successful, you are required to bring the following items to class daily:
• Student Agenda
• R.E.A.C.H Binder
• Lined, white notebook paper
• 3 pencils with erasers (sharpened)…also sharpener with catch to hold shavings
• Box of colored pencils
• Interactive Notebook (IN)
• Independent reading book
• Completed homework (if assigned)

Grading:
• The total number of points you earn during the grading period will determine yours grade. The points are totaled and divided by the number of possible points to receive a percentage grade.

• Grading Scale
o A = 90 – 100
o B = 80 – 89
o C = 70 – 79
o D = 60 – 69
o F = 0 – 59

• Your grade will include the following:
o Tests
o Quizzes
o Labs
o Projects
o Homework
o Class work
o Interactive Notebook (IN)

Labs:
Earth Science can be messy. We will be working with soil, rocks, and liquids. Some of these liquids will include simple chemical solutions. We will also be using different types of equipment in our labs. You are expected to keep all work areas clean. You are also expected to wear goggles and aprons. Every lab group will be expected to work with others. Every lab group will be expected to stay on task, work quietly within your lab group, follow directions given, stay at the assigned station, support each other, cleanup area when lab is completed, and follow lab safety rules.

Homework:
Homework will be given on a daily basis. You are expected to complete the work neatly and to the best of your ability. Homework should be written in complete sentences, paragraph form, and a minimum of a half a page. (Make sure it also includes the correct heading guidelines.)

Late homework will only be accepted till the Friday of the week it was due and will be marked down 50%. In addition, if an assignment is due and not turned in you will be assigned HOMEWORK CLUB that afternoon from 3-3:30pm for you to finish that assignment.

Missed Work:
When you have been absent form the classroom it is your responsibility to check the absent basket, ask peer and/or see me for any missing work. All makeup work must be completed in the allotted time, one day for each day you missed. However, if something was due the first day you missed class, you will be expected to fulfill that commitment the day you return to class. Again, this will be your responsibility to make sure these things have been taken care of.

Tutoring:
I will be after school for tutoring from 3-4pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays in room G105 for help with homework, missing work, or to study; however, if set up a head of time I am willing to stay after an alternative night.
