Course: Physical, Life, and Earth Science (FOSS)Room: G-105Phone #: 619-263-9266 X 4105E-mail: [email protected]
I would like to welcome you to 5th grade science! I look forward to an exciting year in using science to learn about our earth! We will all work together to learn about science and to think and work like a scientist. As a scientist, we will all R.E.A.C.H for excellence together!
Course Description:The FOSS California curriculum has been adopted to introduce you to physical, earth and life science; the sciences you will further explore in 6th, 7th and 8th grade. There are three units to this 5th grade inquiry based curriculum.
Topics You Will Learn:• Mixtures and Solutions Module (Physical Science) consists of investigations that introduce students to fundamental ideas in chemistry. This module looks at the study of structure of matter and the changes or transformations that take place in it.• Living Systems Module (Life Science) is designed to introduce students to transport systems in multicellular organisms. Investigations are aimed to study the circulatory, respiratory, digestive, and excretory systems in humans and the vascular system in plants.• Water Planet Module (Earth Science) includes investigations designed to introduce or reinforce concepts in earth science. The investigations start with Earth in the solar system, and then focus on the dynamics of weather and water cycling in Earth’s atmosphere.
Class Participation/preparedness: (materials)Class discussions help you to learn from each other and the discussions help me spot misunderstanding. Share in the discussions and listen as others share is going to be very important this year.
To ensure that you will be successful, you are required to bring the following items to class daily:• Student Agenda• R.E.A.C.H Binder• Lined, white notebook paper• 3 pencils with erasers (sharpened)…also sharpener with catch to hold shavings• Box of colored pencils• Glue Stick• Science Notebook – (IN – Interactive Notebook)• Independent reading book• Completed homework (if assigned)
Grading:• The total number of points you earn during the grading period will determine your grade. The points are totaled and divided by the number of possible points to receive a percentage grade.• Grading ScaleAcademic CitizenshipA = 90 – 100 E = ExcellentB = 80 – 89 G = GoodC = 70 – 79 S = SatisfactoryD = 60 – 69 N = Needs to improveF = 0 – 59 U = Unsatisfactory• Your grade will include the following:o Testso Quizzeso Labso Projectso Homeworko Class worko Interactive Notebook (IN) Five Star Mead 75PTS 1 Subject Notebook Graph RuledIf you can’t find the graph ruled one then see below Five Star Mead 75PTS 1 Subject Notebook College Ruled
Labs:Science can be messy! You are expected to keep all work areas clean. You are also expected to wear goggles when asked. Every lab group will be expected to work with others. Every lab group will be expected to stay on task, work quietly within your lab group, follow directions given, stay at the assigned station, support each other, cleanup area when lab is completed, and follow lab safety rules.
Homework:You are expected to complete the work neatly and to the best of your ability.Late homework will only be accepted till the Friday of the week it was due and will be marked down 50%. In addition, if an assignment is due and not turned in you will be assigned HOMEWORK CLUB that afternoon from 3-3:30pm for you to finish that assignment.
Missed Work:When you have been absent from the classroom it is your responsibility to check the absent basket, ask peer and/or see me for any missing work.
Tutoring:I will be after school for tutoring from 3-4pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays in room G105 for help with homework, missing work, or to study; however, if set up a head of time I am willing to stay after an alternative night.
