8th Grade Common Core Math (Period 1)

8th Grade Math CPM CC 3 Syllabus

Welcome to 8th grade math! In 8th grade students will experience math in a variety of ways and learn to apply concepts to real life situations. The curriculum that we will be exploring is Core Connections 3, College Preparatory Mathematics,  and other curriculum online. It is imperative that students complete ALL of their classwork in order to develop their individual skills. Students will be expected to work in small groups and partnerships. In order for students to be successful learners there will be a strong emphasis on community and team building skills.

Tutoring

In order to provide extra assistance tutoring will be offered Tuesday from 2:50-3:30. Students will have the opportunity to explore challenging concepts and correct tests or quizzes for an improved score. If you fail to complete classwork you will be assigned mandatory tutoring the week of the missing assignment. Students are also invited to receive community service hours for peer tutoring during these sessions. All students are encouraged to attend!

Supplies

It is mandatory for each student to have the following supplies every day:

• 5 pencils and pencil sharpener with catch (extra lead if using a mechanical pencil)
• Math notebook, loose leaf paper, and graph paper

Homework

Homework will be NOT be assigned in class. If a student has homework, it is a result of not completing their classwork that day. Students will be encouraged to attend tutoring that week to complete their classwork.

Extended learning activities will be available to students who would like to continue exploring the math topic.

Grading Scale 

A 90-100%, B 80-89%, C 70-79%, D 60-69%, F 59% and below

Individual Tests 30% and Quizzes 10%

Classroom Rules/Expectations

To have a safe learning environment and a successful year, it is important that all students follow the classroom rules. The classroom/school rules will be discussed in depth the first week of school. Each student has signed a contract indicating that he/she understands the rules set forth.
