Introduction Letter

Dear KLA Leaders,

My name is Mr. Caperton, and I would like to welcome all new and returning 6th grade students. I will be teaching the 6th grade Math classes and a REACH class. I am looking forward to helping each and every one of you learn about mathematics and how to apply it to the world around us. I am excited to meet and learn about you so that we can best learn together.

A bit about myself: I earned my bachelor’s degree at National University in Computer and Electrical Engineering and then went on for my Master’s Degree in Education with a credential in Mathematics. During the Master’s degree program, I completed my student teaching at Valhalla High School, where I taught Honors Integrated Math I and II. Before I started my education, I was in the US Navy for nearly a decade as an Electrician’s Mate (Nuclear) where I learned and taught others how to apply all mathematical concepts that we will learn this year in real life situations. This will be my second year at Keiller Leadership Academy and considering the 6th graders last year had the best 6th grade math CAASPP scores in many years, I expect to be able to teach you all even better this year!

One of the things I love to do most is spending time with my family. My family includes my lovely wife, my black lab named Zero (Named after the ghost puppy in A Nightmare Before Christmas), my sisters, parents, aunts, and uncles in Texas, and my wife’s side in both California and New Hampshire. I was lucky enough to visit some of the family out in New Hampshire for a week and a half over the summer. Next summer, both the family in Texas and New Hampshire will be visiting us!

Another activity that I enjoy is reading novels. I really enjoy fiction of any sort, whether it be something like sci-fi or fantasy. And of course, novels in a visual format, such as movies, I have greatly enjoyed works such as Star Wars and most (but not all) Marvel movies. Lastly, I love going for walks and hikes on the trails around the area. I especially enjoy Cabrillo National Monument.

In my class, I will show leadership and expect you to do the same. I expect students to respect others, do all of their classwork, participate in class frequently, work diligently in groups, complete all their homework, and most importantly, convey an attitude that they are always striving for success. This year we will focus on acquiring and building our understanding of the fundamentals of previous years while covering in depth everything we need to understand this year for the California Common Core Standards.

If you or your parents have any questions or concerns about your performance in my class or any other issues, you are welcome to set up an appointment with me after school. Email me anytime at [email protected]. I will try to get back to you as soon as possible. I am looking forward to meeting and learning more about each and every one of you!

Sincerely,

Mr. Caperton
