Welcome to Music at KLA!

Dear KLA Families,

My name is Evona Wascinski (Ms. W), and I am excited to continue teaching music to KLA students in TK through 8th grade! I have been teaching Music at KLA since 2015, and I look forward to another wonderful year of making music, learning, and growing together.

Throughout the year, students will have the opportunity to develop their musical skills through singing, movement, listening, playing instruments, music games, music theory, and performance. Each grade level will have a curriculum designed to build upon students' musical knowledge and abilities as they progress through KLA.

🎵 TK & Kindergarten

Our youngest musicians will focus on developing foundational music skills through music listening, singing, and movement. Students will play fun music games, explore a variety of percussion instruments, and learn to perform and identify simple rhythms.

🎶 1st & 2nd Grade

Students will continue developing their listening, singing, and movement skills while exploring a variety of percussion instruments. They will learn to read and perform basic and intermediate rhythms and begin playing songs on the xylophone. Students will also learn about different musical instruments, explore classical music, and discover music from various cultures and parts of the world.

🎼 3rd Grade

Third grade students will begin learning to read and perform music on the recorder. Along the way, they will explore classical and contemporary music while continuing to develop their understanding of musical concepts and performance skills.

🎻 4th & 5th Grade

Fourth and fifth grade students will learn to play violin and/or ukulele while developing their ability to read standard music notation. Students will also explore music history and learn about historically significant and influential musicians.

🎸 6th–8th Grade

Middle school music is primarily an ensemble-based class focused on developing musicianship and preparing students for performances both on and off campus. Students will have opportunities to learn and perform on stringed instruments such as guitar, bass, ukulele, and violin, with drums and piano also available. Students will build their performance skills while developing a foundation in standard music theory and preparing a diverse repertoire for our school community.

A Little About Me

I received an Associate Degree in Music from Grossmont College and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), where I focused my studies on classical double bass performance and Jazz Studies. I hold a Single Subject Music Teaching Credential as well as a Master's Degree in Education from National University.

Outside of teaching, I continue to perform professionally with various musical groups around town and, at times, abroad. Music has always been a very important part of my life, and I love sharing that passion with my students.

When I'm not teaching or performing, I enjoy spending time with my school-aged son, Sebastian, and my family. I also love listening to and performing music, going to the beach, riding bikes, practicing yoga, and spending as much time outdoors as possible.

I am looking forward to a fantastic year filled with music, creativity, learning, and performance! Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to share my love of music with your children. I can't wait to see what we create together this year!
